The Chorotegas, originating from Mesoamerica, are believed to have first migrated to Costa Rica between the sixth and seventh centuries. At one time the Chorotegas occupied the entire Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. Like many indigenous tribes, the Chorotegas have been assimilated into modern Costa Rican society and unfortunately, little still remains of the rich culture and the Chorotega language is now almost extinct.
